If one of your appliances suddenly stops working, leaks, or makes unusual noise, there are a few simple steps you can check before requesting maintenance.
This guide covers both Japanese-brand and U.S.-brand (Whirlpool / GI) appliances commonly found in Okinawa rental homes.
🧊 1. Refrigerator Leaking Water
🔹 Step 1: Check the Source
Confirm the leak is from the refrigerator, not condensation or overstuffed (making the door difficult to closed completely).
If you see water inside, check the area around the door (inside and outside the unit), to see if the plastic that helps the door to closed tightly is deteriorating or not.
🔹 Step 2: Defrost
Turn off the power and open the door for 1–2 hours to defrost any built-up ice in the drain tray.
Wipe dry with a towel.
🔹 Step 3: Check the Drain Pan
Look under the refrigerator, there’s a small plastic drain pan that collects condensation.
Empty or clean it if full.
⚠️ Note: Do not use sharp tools to remove ice.
If the leak continues or the water appears dirty, please submit a maintenance form.
🔌 2. Microwave Not Working

🔹 Step 1: Check Power Supply
Ensure the power cord is plugged in securely.
Try plugging another appliance into the same outlet to confirm power.
If other devices also don’t work, check your breaker panel — the kitchen circuit may have tripped.
🔹 Step 2: Reset and Test
Unplug the microwave for 5 minutes, then plug it back in.
Make sure the door is fully closed, microwaves will not start if the latch is loose.
🔹 Step 3: Other Checks
If the display works but it doesn’t heat, avoid using metal containers or foil (common cause of short circuit).
For U.S. microwaves (Whirlpool, GE, etc.), check that the voltage transformer is connected properly.
⚠️ If you smell burning or see sparks, unplug immediately and contact maintenance.
🌬️ 3. Kitchen or Bathroom Vent Making Noise

🔹 Step 1: Turn Off and Inspect
Turn off the vent and wait for it to stop completely.
Look for dust buildup, insects, or loose parts around the fan cover.
🔹 Step 2: Clean the Cover (for Kitchen Vent only)
Remove the outer cover (many models twist off easily).
Wash it gently with warm soapy water, dry completely, and reinstall.
For further details on how to clean it properly, please refer to this guide.
🔹 Step 3: Persistent Noise
If you hear rattling or scraping, the fan may be unbalanced or worn out.
Turn it off and contact maintenance for cleaning or motor replacement.
💡 Regular monthly cleaning prevents dust from damaging the fan motor.
🍳 4. Whirlpool / GI Stove – No Flame or Weak Flame

🔹 Step 1: Check the Ignitor
Remove the burner cap and clean the metal ignitor gently with a dry toothbrush or cotton swab.
Food or oil buildup can block ignition, refer to this guide for cleaning tips.
🔹 Step 2: Check Gas Flow
Make sure the gas valve is open (handle in line with pipe).
If you smell gas, do not ignite, open windows and contact your gas company.
🔹 Step 3: Try Other Burners
If all burners fail to ignite, check that the power plug for the ignitor is connected (most GI stoves require electricity for sparks).
⚠️ Do not use tools or force the knob. If gas smell persists, shut off the main valve and contact Saki immediately.

🧼 5. Whirlpool / GI Dishwasher Not Working

🔹 Step 1: Check Power and Door Lock
Ensure the door is closed tightly, dishwashers will not start if the door latch isn’t locked.
Confirm power by checking the outlet or breaker.
🔹 Step 2: Check Water Supply
Open the lower panel and confirm the inlet valve (water line) is turned on.
If there is no water, check the kitchen faucet supply valve.
🔹 Step 3: Clean the Filter
Remove the bottom rack and twist off the filter cover.
Rinse the filter under running water to remove food debris.
🔹 Step 4: Reset the Unit
Turn off the dishwasher, unplug it for 10–15 minutes, and plug it back in.
Run a short cycle to test.
💡 Tip: Avoid overloading or blocking the spray arms, this often causes poor cleaning results.
👕 6. Washing Machine Troubleshooting

🔹 Step 1: If Machine Won’t Start
Check if the power plug is properly connected.
Ensure the water supply valve (usually above or behind the machine) is turned on.
Check your breaker panel if the power is off.
💡 Some washing machines have a “child lock” indicator, check your panel for a “CL” or lock symbol. Hold the “Start/Stop” button for a few seconds to disable it.
🔹 Step 2: If It’s Not Draining or Spinning
Open the small drain filter cover (bottom corner of the machine).
Place a towel and bowl, then unscrew the filter cap slowly to drain remaining water.
Clean out any lint, coins, or hair.
⚠️ This is one of the most common reasons for water not draining properly.
🔹 Step 3: If It’s Shaking or Noisy
Make sure the machine is level, adjust its legs if needed.
Do not overload; the drum should be only ¾ full.
Pause the cycle and rearrange clothes evenly inside the drum.
🔹 Step 4: U.S. Models (Whirlpool / GI)
Ensure the door is fully closed; many U.S. washers won’t start if slightly open.
If the washer fills but won’t spin, try resetting by unplugging for 5–10 minutes.
Check that the water hoses are not kinked or clogged.
💡 Regularly clean the lint filter to prevent odor and extend lifespan.
